A graduate from the San Juan Children's Choir (SJCC), where she began studying music at a young age, María Gabriela Fernández-Cerra has participated in various choral groups, such as the San Juan Philharmonic Choir (Coral Filarmónica de San Juan), Camerata Filarmónica de Puerto Rico, Coral Lírica de Puerto Rico and Coralia of the University of Puerto Rico. With the latter, she participated in various international choral competitions and festivals in Canada, Spain, Czech Republic, Italy and Poland.
In 2010, she was a Guest Conductor at the XVI Puerto Rican Handbell Choir Festival. During the summer of 2011, she took courses in choral conducting with Bruce Chamberlain, Charles Bruffy and Weston Noble in Westminster Choir College of Ryder University in Princeton, New Jersey. Since 2009, serves as the Musical Director and Conductor of Ascendit Chamber Choir, an ensemble that specializes in Renaissance music, whose participation in the XV International Choral Kathaumixw in British Columbia, Canada, in July 2012, earned them two First Prices in the Mixed Choir and Chamber Choir categories.
Since 2005, she is a faculty member of the SJCC where she is also conductor of Campanelas (handbell choir). She is currently the Conductor of the SJCC's Advanced Choir.
